Spring Garden Beginnings Update

There is such a thing as tempting the gods. Talking too much, too soon and with too much self-satisfaction has always seemed to me a sure way to court disaster. The forces of retribution are always listening. They never sleep.   ----Meg Greenfield

Yesterday we got about 3" of snow.  No big deal.  A little messy.  We had been hoping for the nice spring weather to keep rolling along, but the "winter that wasn't" hasn't quite given up.

The overnight low was forecast to be 15 degrees, so I ran heat in the rolling greenhouse, and put on a double layer of row cover over the tomatoes.  This morning I went out at 5:45 to change out propane tanks, and the outside thermometer showed only 5 degrees.  Oh oh!  The temperature in the rolling greenhouse, even with the propane heat, had dropped to 22 degrees.  I swapped tanks, cranked up the heat to high, and came back a couple hours later.  Between the heater and the sun, the greenhouse had warmed up to a comfortable temperature, so I uncovered the tomatoes.  I expected all of them to be toast, but it looks like only a handful were frosted.  Fortunately, we grew a lot of extras, so we can replace the ones that don't make it.

Tonight is forecast to be cold again.  A little too cold for April.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
